Soundsphere Magazine Online: 5 Minutes With Murderdolls

Soundsphere Magazine Online recently posted an interview with Murderdolls‘ vocalist Wednesday 13. You can read an excerpt form the interview below and read the whole interview here.

With the Murderdolls‘ latest record ‘Women And Children Last’
having been released at the tail-end of last month, we thought that it
would be a good time to wake Wednesday 13 up at the crack of 1pm at
home in the States for an in-depth chat to find out how the new record
has allowed the project to evolve and progress in 2010.

“We know that we are doing something fresh”

S] What inspired the dark and haunting opening minute of ‘The World According to Revenge’?

W13] Well, that’s a good question. We had the intro in our heads for
a long time but it never had any words over it. One day, I woke up and
had this idea to put down on record. It was actually one of the only
songs which had been recorded in daylight. I eventually came up with
the lyrics for it at two in the afternoon and just told the guy we had
in to record it and that’s what you hear.

S] So was it you alone that worked on that or was that something you came up with Joey [Jordison, lead guitar] and the rest of the band?

W13] That was all me. Out of my mind in a dark room with no lights
on and just laughing, hysterically. It definitely brings some serious
vibes to the record and it was the only track recorded in daylight!
Everything else was done after midnight ’till vocals were finished at
around four-or-five in the morning but that one came to me and I was
just like, ‘roll it, let’s do it’. Because of that, I still remember
the day. I think the track really sets a good opening to the record.

S] Could you tell us about the writing process for, ‘Nowhere’
and what went into that? – for us, this has potential to become the
next Murderdolls anti-anthem.

W13] Yeah, that feels like a catchy song and people could look at it
and say, ‘There’s the radio song’. That was one of the oldest tracks
intended for release, right from when we came off of our last tour. I
guess we wrote the basis for that song in 2003. None of these songs
were complete until we got into the studio to record the new album
though. We had beginnings for stuff and Joey had some ideas for what he
wanted to do for solos and bits of everything. There was something
special about ‘Nowhere’ though, because the demo lasted until this
year. It has got that ‘anthem’ type of vibe to it and it’s not about
horror movies or anything like that. It’s the ‘I’ve been picked on my
whole life and nobody’s going to stop me now’ track. I suppose you
could say that’s our ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ song too. [Laughs]

'Women and Children Last' Reviews

The return of the Murderdolls is upon us as the band’s sophomore album (and first in 8 years) Women and Children Last hits stores today! Referencing Van Halen’s 1980 opus Women and Children First in their Zeuss-produced album’s title 30 years later, the devilish duo of Joey Jordison and Wednesday 13 have
honed their horror-rock into something darker, grittier and more
refined. Of course we’re biased in are assessment though, so see what
the critics had to say about the gruesome twosome’s new album below.

Women and Children Last is now available in a standard edition, special edition with a bonus DVD, and in the super limited edition ‘Last Aid Kit’ collector’s box. You can also snag a copy digitally via iTunes.

In their 7/10 review, 411mania.com
writes, “Aside from the Murderdolls showing more of their storytelling
technique, the performances this time out are much more refined. Beyond
The Valley… was gloriously sloppy, and it suited that record (and its
lyrics well). This time out, with the band getting a little more
serious, the music had to follow suit as well. The piston grooves and
precision pounding fit Women And Children Last almost too well, giving
even common tracks like ‘Drug Me To Hell’ a sidewinding allure. Others,
like ‘Nowhere’ and ‘Summertime Suicide’ come with melodies that
shouldn’t be allowed to accompany tracks about nihilism and
self-destruction because they’re just too damn happy to fit. And yet,
they still do.”

Altsounds.com
quips, “one listen to Women and Children Last and I’d kind of forgotten
that they had ever been away, which turned out to be one of the more
welcome returns in music today (for me at least). Murderdolls aren’t
reinventing the wheel but for now at least they have managed to put a
new tyre on it.”

In their 4/5 review, spheremag.co.uk writes, “In comparison to ‘BTVOTM’ this album is much deeper and wiser; Wednesday‘s lyrics are less schlock-horror and more sinister wit, not to mention his voice is the best it’s been in years; Wednesday sounds heavier and more defined without depriving us and himself of his characteristic gravely scream. Joey‘s
drums and guitars are as expected…..phenomenal; his riffs are heavy,
power-laden beasts and yet, incredibly catchy, keeping you humming them
for days. This is evident in tracks ‘Nowhere’ and ‘Summertime Suicide’.
These are so upbeat and fun that you can’t help but sing along with the
chorus even on the first listening… Overall, this is a worthy follow-up
to ‘BTVOTM’ and will provide the perfect creepy soundtrack to the summer.”

States thenewreview.net,
“Murderdolls have unleashed a sinfully satisfying experience of an
album steeped in horrifyingly humorous lyrics and ravenous riffage.”

While sonicshocks.com
says, “Politically incorrect, playfully violent, happily inconsiderate,
they may have spent eight years away from the spotlight but man, if
this is what they were up to, fuck yeah, good things come to those who
wait after all… They’re back for more blood, back for revenge, ‘scum,
filth, anger and greed’, this is the world according to Wednesday 13
and Mr Jordison, open your ears and let it rip through you. By the time
‘Women and Children Last’ is over, you’ll be addicted and madly looking
for the repeat button, just like me.”

Joey Jordison Says ‘Slipknot Will Return’

Slipknot’s Joey Jordison recharges after Paul Gray tragedy.

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison tells Kyle Munson of that he still mourns the passing of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray, who was found dead May 24 in an Urbandale, Iowa hotel room. “He was my best friend and still is,” Jordison said. “And he was my musical soul mate.”

Jordison also reveals that there were times when he could have been the casualty of rock-star excess and substance abuse in place of his late bandmate.

“I’ve been done with that stuff for three years,” he says. “I thought it was all fun and games, but it’s not. … After I got done with my (2007) tour with Korn, I really went for it after that. … It caught up with me, and that’s it - I just stopped.”

“Life is definitely a lot more precious now,” he adds. “Music right now, really, when I play it, it’s like I’m playing it for all the people that I’ve lost. I think about them all the time.”

On the topic of whether Slipknot will continue, Jordison says, “There will be another Slipknot record, of course.

“But, you know - there aren’t any replacements. Everyone in the band plays bass and can play guitar. We’ll get to that point when we get there. But I want everyone to know - and all my Slipknot fans and all my Iowa fans to know - that no matter what I’m doing right now with [Rob] Zombie and Murderdolls, that Slipknot will return.

“But we’re still dealing with the passing of Paul, God rest his soul. … Paul would never want us to not make another Slipknot record.”

“He was my best friend and still is,” Jordison said. “And he was my musical soul mate.”

Rock 'n' roll is dangerous again, thanks to Murderdolls and Women and Children Last, their sophomore album for Roadrunner Records.

Women And Children Last - BUY NOW $13.99
Women And Children Last Special Edition - BUY NOW $20.99

Due out this August, Women and Children Last is a dirty dose of whiskey-soaked riffs, satanically sleazy solos and infectiously invasive choruses. Which means it’s what the Murderdolls do best, but even better (and filthier) this time around.

The undeniable pairing of Slipknot's Joey Jordison [guitar, drums] and Wednesday 13 [vocals, guitar] is more precisely pissed-off than ever before. Joey and Wednesday tear through unforgettable tracks like "My Dark Place Alone,” “Death Valley Superstars,” “Summertime Suicide” and “Drug Me To Hell,” to name a few. Even though Joey's live role in Murderdolls is axe-slinging, his one-of-a-kind drumming fuels the album. Produced by Zeuss [Hatebreed, Shadows Fall] Women and Children Last exists in an evil little place tucked somewhere in a back alley behind the thrash, glam, punk and arena rock super highways, and Murderdolls have arrived to rip pop culture a new one. All you can do is sing along while they haul off your daughter…

Murderdolls began festering within the collective hard rock consciousness in 2002 when they dropped their debut, Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls. A sensation with fans and critics - Allmusic said “Call it gutter-punk, glam rock, or hair metal, every style is displayed here in its despondent glory”- the album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, despite the fact that the band played a mere 15 shows on U.S. soil. A soundtrack appearance soon followed (Freddy Vs Jason). Truly an international sensation, Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls achieved Silver status in the U.K., where the band was especially loved: television appearances, magazine covers and sold out shows in 5,000 capacity venues abounded. Burning bright and living up to their out-of-control image, the band toured the world for two years, then took a well-deserved break. Joey returned to the studio and the road for two earth-shattering Slipknot records, Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (2004) and All Hope Is Gone (2008). Meanwhile Wednesday continued to put out solo records independently and to play for his rabid fans all over the globe. While on tour with their respective bands, Joey and Wednesday often fielded the same question from fans: When will the Murderdolls be back?

After Jordison finished an extensive, 18-month world tour with Slipknot in 2009, there was no better time to revive the beast. He and Wednesday began texting back and forth, quoting Raising Arizona and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the pair knew the chemistry remained. They began to plot what would become Women and Children Last and were soon holed up in a Hollywood Hills studio in March 2010, with 25 days to record their second unholy offering. They instantly connected over eight years worth of demos and a flurry of new ideas. It was like no break had ever even occurred.

For Jordison, who is spending the summer of 2010 touring with Rob Zombie, this album is the start of something very important. "I consider Women and Children Last the first Murderdolls record," exclaims the multi-instrumental mastermind. "The music is so much heavier now. Murderdolls haven't lost the fun, crazy vibe, but the topics are smarter. Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls was like a sketch and this is the real painting."

To paint this picture with just the right palette of anger and insidiousness, Wednesday dug deep. He declares, "It's definitely personal. I've been doing campy horror lyrics since I was 15-years-old, and I wanted to expand beyond that. For the new Murderdolls, I wanted to keep the humor and violence intact, but I wanted to show a different side of the band. I'm singing about life this time, instead of Dracula. If you really want to get down to it, we're a sex-drugs-rock-n-roll band more than anything."

"Drug Me To Hell" and "Blood Stained Valentine” feature solos from none other than legendary Motley Crue guitarist, Mick Mars. About working with Mars, Jordison states, "He's always been my favorite member of Motley Crue. He's just a really classy guy, and his guitar playing is so unique. We sent the songs to him, and he loved them. Before we knew it, he was in the studio tracking. The way he plays - his style - is so different than anyone that I've ever seen. He's like a demonic Jeff Beck." Wednesday elaborates, "Every day around 6 o'clock, we'd have dinner and the Motley Crue Behind the Music would be on VH1 Classic. So we had to call Mick for 'Blood Stained Valentine.' It was really cool sitting next to this guy in the studio knowing that he wrote some of my favorite songs that were the soundtrack to most of my life. I've always considered Mick Mars to be one of the true villains of rock 'n' roll like Ozzy and Alice Cooper. I hope one day we're looked at in that same way."

Rock ‘n’ roll’s newest villains are here and they’re called Murderdolls.
